Part of Phillip’s gift for his big 3-0 birthday was a quick Galena get-a-way this past weekend. We headed to my parent’s house Friday night and dropped the kids off. My mom planned a little surprise party with some of our family and had some of Phillip’s favorites, Happy Joe’s taco pizza and a fun fetti cake waiting when we got there. Hazel got to play with Shay and Addison which she loved.
Then Saturday morning we loaded up and headed out to Galena, sans kids!!! WEIRD
getting ready to Embark Saturday morning on our kid-less adventure
Although our trip was a short one, 24 hours, we had a lot of fun.
We stayed at the Desoto House, downtown Galena, President Lincoln stayed there! Pretty historical.
We walked around and browsed the shops, ate lunch and Philip had a massage (part of his birthday surprise) Then we took an afternoon nap, cause we could. After our rest, we got ready and headed out early evening for some wine tasting, so much fun!
Galena cellars has a great deal, 6 tastes for $3! The wine tender hooked us up so we had more like 8, what a deal!
We got two of our favorites from the tasting. We are sweet/dessert wine lovers, none of that red sophisticated stuff for us!! 🙂
We browsed some more antique stores and couldn’t believe the outlandish prices. I definitely need to go into business in Galena.
Then we had dinner at One Eleven Main, and WOW
The service was great, the food was acceptional and they even gave Phillip a birthday card and dessert!
We had an awesome window seat upstairs overlooking main street
Saturday night we had planned to go on a ghost tour, but our server at One Eleven discouraged that and said that was more of something we should do when we were old, haha. We opted to drive to Dubuque and see a movie since that has become another rarity upon having children. Although I could barely keep my eyes open (the show was at 10pm) we made it through and gave ourselves pats on the back for not being lame and going to bed at 8 like we wanted to.
Sunday morning it was raining so we took our sweet time getting up and around. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant and picked up some caramel apples on our way out of town
We drove back to my parent’s in a downpour but shortly after we got there the sun came out and it was nearly 70 degrees! Illinois weather, I will never understand you… We had a lovely early dinner with the family and then headed home.
What a quick, but very fun weekend!
